Midrand Reporter received the information from a resident who asked to remain anonymous; he said he was not sure if the traffic police who stopped them are from Region A.
He explained, “They pulled over motorists who had broken the law, told us to put away our cell phones so that we could not record anything, then asked for bribes to let us go.”
Johannesburg Metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the allegations will be looked into.
“We will fully investigate the allegations of corruption. No one should offer money to Metro police officer,” he said.
Ward 93 councillor Annette Deppe said she received a similar complaint two weeks ago about Metro police asking for bribes on the R55 and near the Kyalami Race Track. She pointed out that it would be difficult to find the culprits without proof.
“If you are pulled over by a Metro police officer ask to see a badge and get a name. If the officer refuses to show you a badge then he or she is not allowed to search you,” said Deppe.
The councillor added that to catch the corrupt officials, residents must take down the officers’ number plates, try and take a photo, or get their names, so that the matter can be fully investigated by law enforcement.
