Arrest drama at Boulders

MIDRAND - Three of four suspected hijackers and robbers were apprehended at Boulders Shopping Centre on 16 April.

Although concerned community members said on social media that they saw the suspects’ car at the centre, surrounded by police around 5pm, the real action seems to have taken place between 2pm and 3pm.

According to Songezo Sithole, the centre’s security manager, two police men who were in plain clothes and in an unmarked vehicle, spotted a suspicious looking white Corsa bakkie. Sithole said the police saw that the occupants of the bakkie were pointing towards a Mercedes Benz, whose owner seemed to have just visited a bank inside the centre. As the Mercedez started moving off, the bakkie followed it. The police quickly drove in front of the bakkie and blocked their way. They got out of their vehicle and announced to the occupants of the white Corsa that they were police. The two men in the Corsa allegedly then got out of their car and tried to flee the scene.

A chase ensued, the two men were eventually caught at the centre’s entrance 3.

“As the police chased down the two men, two other men started running towards entrance 2. These guys are suspected to also have been involved,” said Sithole.

According to Sithole, his security personnel caught one of the suspects at entrance 2 near the KFC outlet, however the other suspect escaped. “It seems he disguised himself by acting like one of the centre’s patrons, [he disappeared into the crowd],” he said.

Sithole also said that he heard that the vehicle the suspected criminals had been using was found to have been a hijacked vehicle from Boksburg.

The Midrand Police could not confirm the details of the case.
