Vorna Valley Residents’ Association starts recycling programme
VORNA VALLEY - The Vorna Valley Residents Association has enlisted the help of D&H Recycling and Waste Management Services to recycle the area's trash.
“We are reaching out to all complexes in Vorna Valley to get involved in recycling,” said Marianne Nel from the organisation.
“[The recycling company] will come to your complex to recycle your bins or skips free of charge,” she said.
Nel said residents would benefit as there would be fewer vagrants leaving a mess on their pavements and fewer bins left to be collected by Pikitup. “[We advise] those living in complexes, trustees or managing agents of complexes to contact us,” said Nel.
Jacky Mashapu, general manager of the communication and stakeholder management department at Pikitup, said they welcome the association’s initiative. “As the City, in particular, Pikitup, we welcome any initiative that is geared to promote recycling in homes, schools and business complexes.”
He also said such interventions would help the city to divert waste that is not intended to be disposed of at their landfill sites.
“It is important to note the residents of Johannesburg disposes of
6 000 tons of waste daily at our landfill sites,” Mashapu said.
He encouraged residents of Johannesburg to heed the call to recycle and separate waste at their homes as this would result in diminishing landfill space by 2022.
“Currently, we are running a recycling programme called Separation at Source, in areas serviced by a number of depots. Residents in other areas which are not covered by the programme, are advised to use selected garden sites which have recycling facilities,” he said.
