Criminals smash walls to gain entry, police warn

IVORY PARK - IVORY Park police are warning the community to be vigilant as criminals are breaking down the walls of tuck shops and other shops to gain entry and steal stock.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela said similar cases were reported last year whereby suspects were targeting the Somali and Pakistani shops. She added, “The number of those cases dropped, but it seems criminals may be targeting shops again in the same manner.”

Sekgobela said on 15 May, a Bangladeshi national told police that while he was asleep in his shop in Ivory Park Ext 10, five male suspects broke down the wall of his shop, assaulted him with an iron and stole 10 bags of mealie meal, energy drinks, boxes of cigarettes and an undisclosed amount in cash.

“We are appealing to members of the community to help each other and to work together with the police to fight crime. If you know who these people are, notify police,” she urged.

Anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects can contact Ivory Park police on 011 990 9600.
