Anti-crime awareness campaign

MIDRAND - Midrand police and its Youth Desk embarked on an anti-crime awareness campaign at a Carlswald shopping centre.

Police spokesperson Constable Matome Tlamela said, “We distributed pamphlets with safety tips to prevent theft out of motor vehicles, smash and grabs and other crimes in the area.”

Tlamela said the drive was to make people aware of crimes that take place in shopping centres.

Police offered the following tips to minimise or avoid car theft crimes:

  •  Do not leave your car unlocked
  •  Never leave your car running, especially while it is unattended or unlocked
  •  Many people leave a spare key under the car just in case they get locked out and thieves know exactly where to check for a key
  •  Never leave your car window open, even during summer when it is scorching hot, as it draws criminals’ attention when you are not in the vehicle
  •  Park in public areas. Avoid parking in places which are not highly visible
  •  Put an alarm system in your car. Car thieves tend to avoid cars with alarms or anti-theft devices
  •  Install a vehicle immobiliser system as thieves can bypass your ignition by hot-wiring your car
  •  Consider installing a GPS tracking system
  •  Do not leave valuables and personal items visible on car seats.
