The men, aged 32 and 35, allegedly approached the complainant pretending to be interested in forging a friendship with her. The complainant and the men exchanged telephone numbers and went separate ways.
Midrand police social crime prevention co-ordinator, Constable Nanti Belebesi, said the complainant alleged that the following day the men called her to have lunch with them. They allegedly told her that they were interested in investing a lot of money in South Africa and invited her to join their venture.
“The suspects allegedly asked the complainant to look for R1 million to invest,” said Belebesi, who went on to say that they allegedly told her she would get back her R1 million with 100 percent interest after three hours. “The woman got suspicious and reported the matter to Midrand police. Police set a trap and arrested the men,” said Belebesi.
The suspects were charged with fraud after police found documents in their vehicle that are allegedly used to defraud people. The men will soon appear in Midrand Magistrates’ Court.
