The men, who are aged 30 and 35, walked into a liquor store on Kyalami Boulevard on 20 January 2013, posing as customers.
After a few minutes of being in the store, they each took out a gun and pointed them at the store assistants. As they were robbing the store, an unknown man walked in. They shot into the air in order to intimidate the man and demanded the keys to his car.
The two men made off with an undisclosed amount of alcohol and drove off with the man’s vehicle.
“The police were then called to the scene,” said Constable Matome Tlamela, head of communications at Midrand Police Station.
“The lead they followed was that of the hijacked vehicle,” said Tlamela.
“A few minutes after the robbery, the vehicle was spotted on the corner of Allandale Road and Harry Galaun Drive, [with the help of the Johannesburg Flying squad]” she said.
When the two hijackers saw the police were on their tail, they stopped the vehicle and tried to run away. The two officers who had been following them in their patrol car, chased them down on foot and caught them along Allandale Road. The men were arrested by constables Phineas Seanego and Masilo Mokgobu.
“On behalf of our management and the station commander, Colonel Steven Moodley, we would like to commend the good work of the arresting officers, Johannesburg Flying Squad members and Detective Lekyanyane Sekhunkwhane for his expertise with regards to the case,” said Tlamela.
