Help a kid to see, help them with education
MIDRAND - Midrand's own Dr Mikateko Shisana recently founded I Can See, a non-governmental organisation which aims to help children who suffer from visual impairment.
As a member for the Change Bible Church in Midrand, Shisana was moved to start the organisation earlier this year in response to teachings by Pastor Xola Nzo, nephew of ANC stalwart, Alfred Nzo.
After a talk by Nzo, Shisana took funds she had saved for her 40th birthday party celebration and cash gifts received from friends and family and launched the organisation in Katlehong in Johannesburg.
“As a child raised by a single mother from a humble background, I feel blessed when I look at my journey. This project is an opportunity to touch and impact someone’s life at a very young age,” said Shisana.
The organisation partnered with SpecSavers to identify and support children who have poor vision in a bid to reduce educational challenges from being unable to see properly. Screening, testing and the provision of spectacles will be supplied to those in need.
“We ultimately want to empower children to study effectively and receive a good education,” said Shisana.
Children recently received glasses and were given children’s bibles beautifully packaged in a fun backpack. They proceeded to honour Shisana by presenting her with a birthday cake and a song.
Shisana attributed the success of the project to her pastor. Nzo said, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”
