Johannesburg Taxi Association member shot dead

PHOMOLONG - A 60-year-old member of the Johannesburg Taxi Association was shot and killed while driving with his seven-year-old son on Paulsmor Street in Phomolong, Rabie Ridge, at around 7am on 4 September.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said the man was shot while driving a white Toyota bakkie.

Mogale said suspects, driving a blue Mercedes, shot the victim a number of times in the upper body. It is unclear at this stage how many suspects were in the car or how many shots were fired. The motive of the killing is not yet known.

Mogale said the vehicle continued to move forward for about 25m before it crashed into a gate.

By 11.30am, police were still on the scene.

Members of the Johannesburg Taxi Association were also on the scene and said the man was a member of the organisation. The identity of the man is known to Midrand Reporter but is being withheld until his next of kin have been informed.

Fellow association member, Philimon Yenge, confirmed that the child was safe and at home with his family.

Yenge said the association was peaceful and they were unaware of a taxi route conflict which could have led to the shooting.

Police have cordoned off the area in which the shooting took place on the morning of 4 September.
