The pupils learned about photography at a three-day workshop which ran from 26 to 28 August by French non-governmental organisation, An Eye For An Eye.
Founded by Dorothee Adam and Claire Mazard, the project is focused on teaching photography and also to enable children to discover different cultures and to promote their environment.
They launched the photographic exchange between Rebonwe Primary School and Calenzana Primary School in France. “These children are already used to sharing pictures with each other and also using photography as a means of communication,” said their project co-ordinator, Cristina Tohhaso.
“Every month, children from France and South Africa share pictures showing their daily lives. They take photos from the dumping areas and polluted streams, and they also learn about the importance of recycling,” she said.
Peter Mpangane, a school teacher at Rebonwe and a photo exchange co-ordinator, said the non-governmental organisation donated two cameras and a stand during a prior visit to their school last year. “This could possibly ignite a passion for [them] to follow photography as their future career,” said Mpangane.
Pupil, Sabelo Molongwana, said apart from taking photos, he had learnt about the importance of saving water and fixing leaking taps.
