Tuck shop robbery arrests

IVORY PARK - A few weeks after Ivory Park police took to the streets to raise awareness against tuck shop robbers and criminals who smash shop walls, three alleged masterminds behind these types of robberies were arrested.

Police received a complaint of a business robbery while patrolling in Ivory Park Ext 2 and were told that the suspects were smashing the walls of tuck shops within the area and committing robberies. Ivory Park police spokesperson Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela said, “A shop owner was robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash and other grocery items. The victim was also shot by the suspects on his lower body before they fled the scene.”

The suspects also allegedly robbed two other tuck shops around the Ivory Park area before being arrested. The first suspect was arrested when police ran into him in the early hours of the morning when rushing to attend to the business robbery scene.

The suspect’s clothing was dusty and one of his fingers was injured. He said his uncle had assaulted him. Police did not believe his story and put him into the police van so they could go and talk to his uncle after attending to the business robbery scene.

When police got to the scene of the robbery the man in the van, thinking that police knew what he did, started begging police not to arrest him because he was not the one who fired shots at the scene. He further told them that it was his friend who shot the victim. The man was arrested.

A second suspect was arrested in Ivory Park Ext 2 next to the taxi rank.

The suspect was driving a gold Toyota Hilux which was allegedly used to transport the goods that were stolen during the robbery from the tuck shops in Ivory Park.

“The third suspect was tracked down and arrested in Orange Farm where he was found with an illegal firearm. Police are looking for a fourth suspect and are investigating if the suspects are linked to similar crimes or other cases in Sebokeng and Orange Farm.”
