Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said Sidu was shot while driving a white Toyota bakkie. Mogale said suspects, driving a blue Mercedes, shot the victim a number of times in the upper body through the driver’s window. It is unclear at this stage how many suspects were in the car or how many shots were fired.
The car was found parked at a nearby gate after the shooting. The motive for the killing is not yet known.
Members of the Johannesburg Taxi Association on the scene said the man was a member of the organisation. Fellow association member, Philimon Yenge, said the child was safe and at home with his family, a statement Mogale confirmed.
Yenge said the association was peaceful and they were unaware of a taxi route conflict which could have led to the shooting.
On 8 September, Mogale said that although the police had opened a case of murder, no arrests had yet been made.
