Rabie Ridge police spokesperson Constable Jacob Nhlongo said the 24- year-old suspect was arrested in Kanana Ext 4 the evening the body was discovered.
“Investigations have revealed that the suspect, along with the mother of the child and her boyfriend had gone for a drink in Ivory Park the previous evening and afterwards the suspect, who is a friend to the woman’s boyfriend, offered them all a lift back home, the child was also present as she was travelling with the mother.”
It is alleged that the suspect first dropped off his friend and drove off with the woman and her child. Along the way, he allegedly told the woman he was not taking her to her place, but to his home. The woman begged him to take them home, but he allegedly refused.
The woman reported that, in a panic, she opened the door of the car while it was moving slowly and jumped out of the vehicle. She said she tried to pull her child out of the car with her, but the suspect sped off.
“The woman phoned her boyfriend and they started trying to trace the child. Unfortunately, the child was found dead the next morning, only wearing a top, no pants,” said Nhlongo.
The suspect will appear at the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court on a charge of murder soon.
