Cell tower batteries recovered, suspects arrested

MIDRAND - Rabie Ridge police arrested two suspects aged 30 and 35 for possession of suspected stolen cell batteries in Mayibuye, Midrand, on 19 October.

Police spokesperson, Constable Jacob Nhlongo said, “Police received an anonymous call about suspects in Mayibuye off-loading batteries – which are suspected to be stolen from a cell tower – into a bakkie. We are investigating which tower the batteries were stolen from. At this point, we don’t know which company they belong to.”

One of the suspects alleged that the batteries were brought by a friend of his from the North West province.

Nhlongo said batteries were being stolen a lot lately and the matter was becoming serious. He thanked members of the Rabie Ridge community who send anonymous tip-offs to police about battery-related thefts.

Police are asking companies which deal with cell towers to visit the Rabie Ridge Police Station to identify the batteries if they have any that are missing.

The suspects will appear in court soon.
