House robber nailed after allegedly stealing R16 000

IVORY PARK - A man was recently detained in the Ivory Park police cells after allegedly committing a house robbery with a fellow suspect in Kaalfontein and stealing R16 000.

It is alleged that two suspects robbed a couple who were asleep in the early hours of 9 November. The suspects reportedly entered the house through the door after the couple forgot to lock up.

Ivory Park police spokesperson Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela said the suspects allegedly threatened the couple with a firearm and demanded money from the woman, who had just been paid R72 000 by a women’s stokvel club on 8 November.

Sekgobela said, “The complainant managed to hide some of the money during the robbery and the suspects only stole R16 000 and cellphones.”

The complainant was able to identify one of the suspects, who lives on her street and is also a colleague of a son of one of the ladies at the women’s club.

Sekgobela said after the incident the complainant followed one of the suspects and saw the 36-year-old entering his yard. The complainant entered the same yard and she allegedly found one of the cellphones taken in the robbery on the ground. The victim said that she then took the cellphone and returned to her place to get dressed decently.

Thereafter, she went back to the suspect’s place and demanded the money that was stolen from her. The suspect denied that he was among the suspects who had robbed her. Police were called and a docket for house robbery was opened by Ivory Park police. The suspect was arrested and detained.

Police are now looking for his accomplice.

“We urge residents to not keep large amounts of money in their homes, but rather put it in their bank accounts in order to not tempt robbers. And avoid confronting criminals.”

The suspect will appear in the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court soon facing charges of house robbery.
