Bikers remember fallen bikers and donate blood in Midrand
MIDRAND - Bikers around Gauteng came together to remember fallen bikers at the Annual Christian Motorcyclists Association (CMA) Biker Memorial Run and to donate blood for the South African National Blood Service (SANBS).
President at CMA South Africa and international co-ordinator, Rene Changuion said, “Every year we gather to remember bikers who have passed on and to donate blood as a way of offering something worthwhile to the community. As the festive season nears, we know more blood is needed.”
Changuion said the memorial service was mainly to remember the fallen bikers, but it was also a sad reminder of the challenges bikers face on the road. “All road users must be patient with each other, bikers, pedestrians and motorists lose their lives on the roads because someone would have not stayed within the required speed limit or paid heed to other rules of the road.”
The South African National Blood Service worked with nurses who drew blood from bikers at the memorial service. A spokesperson of SANBS, Thatayaone Mosasane confirmed that 59 units of blood were collected on the day.
Mosasane said, “South Africa requires over a million units of donated blood every year. The SANBS needs to collect 3 000 units a day. Every 35 seconds somebody in SA receives donated blood.”
