Gunbattle ends in suspect’s death

MIDRAND - A suspect was shot and killed during a shootout with Rabie Ridge police after trying to get away in a vehicle allegedly hijacked in Olievenhoutbosch.

Rabie Ridge police spokesperson, Constable Jacob Nhlongo, said Garsfontein Police Station’s Tracing Task Team, spotted a silver Toyota Avanza which was reported as stolen and he followed the vehicle along Modderfontein Road, with three occupants inside.

It is alleged that on the corner of Modderfontein and Freedom roads, the suspects noticed that a police Golf 5 was following them and in their haste to get away, they bumped into another vehicle.

Nhlongo explained, “The suspects shot at a police officer and he shot back. One suspect was shot five times in the upper body and died on the scene. The other two suspects got out of the vehicle and ran away.

“A 9mm pistol with the serial number filed off, one magazine with four live [rounds of] ammunition and the hijacked vehicle were recovered. The police officer was not injured during the shootout. A carjacking case was opened at Honeydew Police Station.”

A case of possession of a hijacked motor vehicle, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition has been opened. An inquest docket into the death of one of the suspects has also been opened.
