Police will protect stokvel withdrawals

MIDRAND - Rabie Ridge police are conducted festive season operations to curb holiday crimes such as theft and drunk driving.

The police station’s commander, Colonel Phostik Maoto, said last year was a difficult year in terms of crime, but police did all they could to ensure criminals were brought to book.

Due to an increase in stokvel crimes, where people are followed to and from the bank on days they share stokvel money, Rabie Ridge police are available to escort stokvels to the bank to avoid people being robbed of all their year’s savings. He also mentioned that the area is usually hard hit by property and vehicle crimes during the festive season.

“We urge residents to avoid buying houses and vehicles online as fraudsters target people hoping to get a ‘good deal’ during the festive season in whatever they purchase.”

Maoto explained that police and liquor shop owners agreed to close businesses as early as 2am over the festive season as alcohol contributes to most crimes in Rabie Ridge.

“Do not drink and drive and avoid drinking too much as you may commit a crime while under the influence of alcohol. Police and Community Policing Forum members will patrol and make sure liquor outlets do not sell alcohol to underage children,” Maoto stated.

This year, Rabie Ridge police will continue to curb problematic crimes which gripped the area, such as drug abuse, drunk driving and possession of unlicenced firearms.

Maoto said an example of crimes include the weekend of 4 December 2015 where 18 people were arrested for drunk driving. In the past three months, two police officers, who do not work at Rabie Ridge Police Station, shot their wives and committed suicide within the Rabie Ridge policing area. One of the women survived and was taken to a hospital.
