Business robber poses as technician

MIDRAND - A suspected business robber, who posed as a technician named 'Jeffrey', was recently arrested by officers of Sebenza Police Station in Kempton Park.

The robber allegedly held up a Tembisa businessman after he was hired to install a security alarm system on the business premises.

Sergeant Sharon Tsotsotso, communications officer of the Sebenza Police Cluster said, “On 18 February at about 6pm, the man who identified himself as Jeffrey pulled a gun on the victim while he was looking away.”

In a statement to the police, the victim said that while Jeffrey was supposed to be installing the alarm system, he heard a gun cocking and looked in the direction of the sound and allegedly saw Jeffrey pointing a gun at him.

Tsotsotso said the suspect allegedly demanded that the victim do an EFT transfer of an undisclosed amount of money to his account. After the victim had done so, the suspect is said to have then tied him up with cable ties and took him to the boardroom where he allegedly stole his cellphone, laptop and company car keys.

The victim managed to escape and called the police as soon as the suspect left.

The company’s white Toyota Hilux, which the suspect made his escape in, had a tracker. “The car was traced to Delmas and was recovered where the suspect was also arrested,” said Tsotsotso.

She said the suspect is facing two charges, one for possession of a stolen motor vehicle and the other for robbery.

“He is currently in the custody of Delmas Police Station, where he will appear at the Delmas Magistrates’ Court on 1 March for the possession of a stolen motor vehicle charge,” she said.

After the first court appearance, the suspect will then be moved to Sebenza Police Station, where he will appear in Tembisa Magistrates’ Court for the armed robbery charge.
