Botshabelo reacts to abandoned babies’ articles in the Midrand Reporter
MIDRAND - BOTSHABELO, an organisation that cares for abandoned children or those given up for adoption, has reacted to two stories published in the Midrand Reporter recently about an abandoned foetus of close to nine months, in Rabie Ridge and an abandoned baby in Noordwyk.
The home’s funding coordinator, Michelle Hinrichsen said the stories tug at the heart because Botshabelo cares for abandoned babies and so it is very ‘close to home’. Hinrichsen mentioned that although there are these heartbreaking stories in the community, Botshabelo would like to share stories of abandoned babies that the home came across.

She revealed that in 2015 the home managed to place 16 children in families through adoption or reunification. And this year, Botshabelo has already accepted three babies into the home.
Hinrichsen shared the story of a child who was brought to the home this year, a little boy born nearly two months premature and abandoned at a hospital. She said, “His story is a wonderful one of a second chance given when there was no hope. He only weighed 1.6kg at birth and barely gained 100g in his three and a half weeks in hospital.”
Hinrichsen said the little boy was brought to the home weighing 1.68kg and gained 400g in his first week at the home and is now a healthy, strong boy.

She stated that Botshabelo has seen cases like this many times, but are honoured to be able to spend time and resources to love and care for these children.
She thanked the many people who donate their finances, time and support to Botshabelo to ensure they can keep caring for more children.
