Motorists warned as opportunistic criminals target fuel stations
“Most of these incidents are never reported to the local police station or shared on social media, which creates the impression that the problem is less severe than it actually is,” says Ria Sebetsa, operations director, Dillon Maduray.
“Security systems are no longer a luxury, but a requirement for both homes and businesses and should be maintained and tested regularly.”
This warning comes from Ria Sebetsa Security Service operations director Dillon Maduray as law enforcement and private security companies continue battling evolving criminal activity across Midrand.
Motorists and passengers are continuing to be urged to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary cellphone use in public spaces following another brazen theft incident captured on video at a Midrand fuel station.

The footage shows a man, who is travelling with others in a white vehicle, snatching a cellphone from a motorist at the Engen Garage on New Road before speeding away.
The incident has once again highlighted the growing trend of opportunistic cellphone thefts targeting drivers and passengers at petrol stations, drive-thrus, shopping centres, and busy intersections across Gauteng.
Maduray confirmed that Ria Sebetsa was aware of the incident. “Unfortunately, incidents like these are becoming increasingly frequent at shopping centres, malls, roadways, and especially filling stations.
In many cases, customers are distracted on their phones or are simply not as vigilant as they should be, making them easy targets for opportunistic criminals,” he said.
He explained that many victims failed to report cellphone thefts because they may not have insurance for their devices or believe the cases are too minor to pursue.
“Most of these incidents are never reported to the local police station or shared on social media, which creates the impression that the problem is less severe than it actually is,” said Maduray.

“Motorists and passengers are urged to remain vigilant at all times and to avoid using mobile devices unnecessarily while in public spaces. When approaching stop streets or traffic lights, devices should be kept out of sight and secured away from public view.
“Filling stations also need to strengthen and improve their security measures to provide customers with greater peace of mind and a stronger sense of safety while on site.”
Winter crime fears grow after violent Midrand robberies
Meanwhile, concerns are also growing over residential crimes in Midrand, particularly in Vorna Valley, where several violent incidents have been reported over recent weeks.
Maduray explained that criminals are increasingly targeting homes with little or no security infrastructure in place. According to him, at least two incidents were reported in Vorna Valley where suspects allegedly gained entry into homes and held families hostage for extended periods.

Stolen items reportedly included jewellery, cellphones, laptops, cash, and other valuables. “These incidents occurred in broad daylight, at times when residents least expected it.”

It is understood that the suspects are operating in groups of three to four men and are believed to be using nearby getaway vehicles. In the latest reported incident on May 21, suspects allegedly used a Toyota Venture taxi as a getaway vehicle.
“It is important to note that the homes targeted did not have security systems in place.”
As the winter season approaches, he warned that criminal activity was expected to increase, urging residents and business owners to prioritise safety and security measures at all times.
Please take note of the following safety tips:
- Ensure all entry points are secured at all times, both day and night.
- Alarm systems should be used daily and form part of your routine. Outdoor beams should remain armed during both daytime and nighttime hours, as they serve as an effective early warning system.
- Adequate lighting in driveways and yards is essential, as it acts as a deterrent to criminals.
- Any suspicious persons, movement, or vehicles should immediately be reported to your local security provider or SAPS.
- Be cautious about who is granted access onto your premises. Ensure all domestic workers, contractors, and service providers are properly vetted and trustworthy.
- Safety starts with you – remain aware of your surroundings at all times.
