Success for the police

GLENFERNESS – Two men have been sentenced to 17 and 18 years imprisonment for house robbery and attempted murder.

Joseph Nkosi, 38, and Kamogelo Nyalungwi, 22, have been sentenced to 18 and 17 years imprisonment respectively following their arrest for attempted murder and robbery committed last year.

Their accomplice, who is still unknown, managed to get away on the day when the two men were detained by Glenferness community members and a private security company that was called to the scene.

Constable Matome Tlamela, head of communications for the Midrand Police Station said, “The police were called to arrest the two men.

“The men had approached two gardeners who were sitting under the shade of a tree inside a yard of a house on Bridle Pass Road. The two gardeners said as they were relaxing at around 1.45pm, they suddenly saw three men approach them.

“Two of them had guns and they pointed them at the gardeners. They forced the gardeners into the kitchen where they found the maid. They then asked her where the owner was. They tied up the gardeners and maid in the kitchen.”

According to Tlamela, the suspects then went in search of the owner in the house. However, a neighbour said that they heard a gunshot and immediately called their security company whose patrol team was in the area.

“Two security vehicles were dispatched to the home and the security guards said they saw three men beating a wounded man who was on the ground next to the house. When the men saw the vehicles they ran in different directions.”

The commotion caused other neighbours to come to the rescue. One armed security guard caught one of the suspects and the community apprehended one, however, the third got away.

“The two men’s identities were later established as Nkosi and Nyalungwi. The police arrived shortly and took statements from the gardeners and the security guard,” said Tlamela.

The man who was shot in the upper body recovered from his wounds. “The men recently appeared at Randburg Magistrates’ Court and were sentenced,” said Tlamela.

“The station commander, Colonel Steven Moodley, as well as the rest of the station’s management, would like to commend Detective Sergeant Edward Dikgale for the excellent work he did,” she said.
