Elderly celebrate Mother’s and Father’s Day
MIDRAND – Midrand's senior citizens are celebrated as the mothers and fathers of the community by the Midrand Senior Citizens Club.
The Midrand Senior Citizens Club caters to the needs and entertainment of the town’s most senior residents and on 26 June, the club held a joint Mother’s and Father’s Day celebration in Noordwyk.
The aim of the celebration was to make the citizens, most of whom are great grandparents, feel special.
“The club’s activities include meetings for tea and fellowship,” said the club chairperson, Dolly Govender. She added that the club sometimes takes day trips outside of Midrand just to keep the elderly entertained. She said it was important to keep senior citizens involved in activities to keep them active.
“We meet at Sagewood School between 2pm and 5pm on Sundays,” said Govender. She said activities include a book club, walks in the park, yoga and meditation.
“Snacks are provided by the club, there is also music and dancing.”
Diane Subban, 84, who is the oldest member of the club, said she especially enjoyed the dancing. “I am in the club to celebrate us today, I am especially glad that there is music and we can dance,” said the lively woman.
Rajma Moodley, 80, said as a qualified dressmaker she enjoys meeting people with the same interests as herself. “It’s always very good to get together with everybody,” said Moodley.
