Classical chess, known for its rigorous demands, offers players extended thinking time to carefully analyse positions and calculate their moves. Matches can stretch for hours, rigorously testing players’ technical abilities, patience, endurance, and decision-making prowess under pressure.

At this tournament, 97 players engaged in intense battles, with 30 participants in the Open section, 30 in the High School, and 37 in the Primary School. It was a dramatic showdown, with players taking calculated risks and avoiding rash decisions, all while Onicca Kekae recorded the scores and arbiters Sanele Mthombeni and Zach Roets ensured smooth proceedings.

Midrand Chess Club coach Kgosimang Molefe said the tournament far surpassed expectations, showcasing the increasing popularity of chess in the community.
