Taxi SA’s winter school success

RANDJESPARK – SA Taxi Foundation is running a winter school for the pupils of JB Matabane Secondary School.

While their peers are taking a rest during the winter break, the Grade 12 pupils of JB Matabane Secondary School in Ivory Park are going through their modules with the help of SA Taxi Foundation-appointed tutors.

The children are mostly taking classes in pure mathematics, accounting and economics. The foundation has provided the workspace in their Randjespark head offices and tutors at their own expense.

Kalnisha Singh, director of the foundation, said they took it upon themselves to help the pupils improve their marks after becoming aware that some of them did not have a maths teacher. “We decided to adopt the school and help them catch up with their maths curriculum for the year so that they can have good enough marks to gain entry into university,” said Singh.

She added that teaching techniques included utilising more exam question papers during class and homework; using a variety of textbooks for a better understanding of the subjects; the use of practical examples and encouraging pre-reading; clearly defined and outlined topic;s and one-on-one consultations which were used to identify problematic topics.

“We encourage group work and class discussions. Tests are also written daily.”

Singh said initially the results were not impressive, however, they were gradually seeing an improvement in pure mathematics marks through one-on- one interactions.

“There has been a clear trend of [pupils] lacking self-confidence which is slowly seeming to improve throughout as they gain confidence with understanding the work. We’ve extended the programme for a week to monitor their progress,” said Singh.
