Pupils have a great time at camp

MIDRAND – A camp experience for Glen Austin High School pupils.

Glen Austin High School pupils participated in the Provincial Land Service Camp during the winter school holidays.

Vice principal of the school, Dirk van Niekerk, said the camp took place at Magaliesberg Retreat. He explained that land service is an activity which promotes the love of nature and people.

“Glen Austin High School registered with the land service organisation in 2014 and has made land service the heartbeat of the school’s community service. [There were] 140 pupils from different schools who participated in the camp and 25 of those pupils were selected to attend the national camp.”

Four Glen Austin pupils Kaone Motsaathebe, Nobuhle Ngubeni, Mokgadi Ngubeni and Nthabiseng Matepe were chosen as national representatives and Thato Mathobela, Koketso Ramatlou, Rachel Robertson and Avuyile Gxoyiya were chosen as national reserve representatives. Nobuhle was chosen as the junior leader.

Van Nierkerk explained that pupils were selected for national representation based on a points system at the school as well as contributions they made at the camp. Activities at the camp revolved around teamwork, leadership, empathy for others as well as conservation.

Motsaathebe, who has been chosen as a national reserve representative for two years said, “The Land Service Camp has taught me to believe in myself.”

Another pupil, Rachel Roberston said, “The camp makes me feel like I am part of a family that loves to serve.”

Later in the year, the juniors will go to the Northern Cape for the national camp, while the seniors will travel to the Free State in December.
