Support World Food Day

JOHANNESBURG – Give food this World Food Day and keep hunger at bay for many children and adults who are starving in South Africa.

To commemorate World Food Day on 16 October, FoodForward SA will, in partnership with Checkers, hold a food drive at the Mall of Africa and in Cape Town from 13 to 16 October.

FoodForward SA managing director, Andy du Plessis said his organisation aimed to raise tons of food which will be distributed to orphanages, old-age homes, homes for the disabled, shelters for abused women and children, and youth development centres, nationally.

Shoppers are encouraged to purchase food at Checkers and drop off donations at the FoodForward SA stand, which will be located outside Checkers in Mall of Africa. The organisation is also challenging companies and schools to get involved by holding their own food drives.

“The rise in food and fuel prices has placed added pressure on households to meet their food security needs for their families, which places an even greater pressure on us to ensure that we source enough edible surplus food to meet the growing demand from NPOs requesting assistance. We, therefore, rely heavily on donations to support our operations,” said Du Plessis.

“The impact of the current economic situation has, however, been mitigated by the fact that we have successfully managed to enlist the support and donations from suppliers like Checkers, who have been generously supporting us for years.”

Those unable to visit the malls can make a donation online at www.foodforwardsa.org. For as little as R35, the organisation is able to feed a person for a month, and with R400, provides meals for a year.

The most needed items include:

  • Rice, maize meal, samp, cereal and pasta
  • Dried beans, lentils, tinned fish, soya mince and milk powder
  • Jam, peanut butter and canned mix vegetables
  • Cooking oil, salt and sugar.
