The Midrand police want to warn residents about crime taking place in the vicinity of the BP Garage on the corner of Bekker Road and Le Roux Avenue in Vorna Valley.
The suspects use jamming equipment and also interfere while people are withdrawing money at the FNB ATM. The suspects drive a white Golf 6 and sometimes a Polo Vivo. Both cars do not have registration plates.
The Midrand police operations commander, Captain Lionel Chetty, has confirmed the spate of crimes on the above-mentioned roads.
Chetty said card swapping cases are not only taking place in Vorna Valley but have also been reported at San Ridge Square Shopping Centre, Carlswald Lifestyle Centre, Boulders Mall and the Mall of Africa.
He also mentioned that the police conducted an operation at all these hotspots on 20 October and 17 people were arrested as a result. The operation involved police visibility and the police also searched cars and security guards at these centres. Some guards were arrested for operating illegally as they did not have the right paperwork.
The police run operations once a month in Midrand in an attempt to reduce crime. The police said many cases of common crime (a crime which takes place without weapons) have been reported around Vorna Valley and the victims are usually people who jog early in the morning or late afternoon.
Chetty said more operations will take place and more arrests will be made.
