Legavaan dies after storm

MIDRAND – There are a lot of legavaans in the Waterfall area and it has raised a lot of concern for their safety during the floods.

DA councillor for Ward 132, Annette Deppe has advised residents to keep their animals safe during storms.
This after the death of a legavaan that was rescued during the floods on Monday night.
Deppe said the legavaan was caught by debris on the side of a bridge when it was rescued by members of the Community Policing Forum, who rushed it to the reptile rescue centre. However, on Thursday morning, the reptile reportedly died.
“A member of the forum who deals with reptiles, rushed it to the centre to keep it warm but, unfortunately, I received a call that it had died. I have received information that there are a lot of legavaans in the Waterfall area and it has raised a lot of concern for their safety during the floods,” she said.
Deppe further pleaded with residents to keep their pets safe during thunderstorms. “Animals become very scared when there are thunderstorms and lightning. People must ensure that their pets are kept indoors for their safety. Those who cannot keep them in the house must take them to their garages and safe shelter.”
Community Policing Forum chairperson, Steven Johnston said although the legavaan is the only incident reported, residents are welcome to call him for assistance with regard to any crises they may encounter concerning endangered pets during a storm.
