Community defeats fire

MIDRAND – The residents of Country View saved the night when they united to stop a ranging fire in one of the residents home.

The Midrand community of Country View saved the day when house number 47 on the corner of Strelitzia Avenue and Sonneblom Street was about to be engulfed by flames in a raging fire that started in their shed at about 11pm on 23 November.

One of their neighbours, Yamo Nene, who was the first to see the flames and hear the screams of the domestic worker who was assumed to be trapped, said he was listening to music when he noticed a light through his bedroom window that kept appearing, only to realise that is was the flames of a fire which had risen higher than the fence.

Emergency services arrive on to the scene.

“I immediately alerted my whole family, and we came out of the house, screaming, help to alert the other neighbours.”

A message was sent by one of the residents on the community WhatsApp group, which assisted in making the whole suburb aware of what was happening. The people of Country View came out in their numbers with fire extinguishers and buckets of water.

The Midrand Fire Station was contacted when the fire was first noticed by numerous individuals, but the truck took more than 30 minutes to arrive. However, the united community was able to tame the blaze until the fire brigade arrived on the scene.

Flames can be seen through one of the house gates.
