A total of 10 schoolgoers from Kaalfontein Secondary School will begin next year’s academic year with new school clothes after they each received uniforms worth R600 from the non-profit organisation, Divine Favour Mentorship and Coaching, in conjunction with SBK Security Services.
The organisation launched its mentorship and coaching programme at the school in April.
On 5 November, the organisation kept its promise to 10 schoolgoers from disadvantaged backgrounds to buy them each a uniform.

Founder of the non-profit organisation Patience Baloyi, said the children were selected after having written essays about their family background. “A lot of the [children] in this school are from poor and child-headed families. After reading their essays we selected 10 who really needed intervention,” she said.
“We made a request for sponsorship to companies and SBK Security Services responded positively.”
In the seven months of working with the school, the organisation hosted career workshops and held Saturday classes where they taught those in attendance maths, science and accounting. Not only was academic assistance offered, but the children were also served meals in-between weekend classes.
The organisation is currently in the process of preparing a library for the school and revamping the school’s sickroom.

“We have gone out to ask for donations for books and people have come out to give to the school. We are working on the shelves and getting more books,” Baloyi added.

“We want to encourage [schoolgoers] to read more and to [assist them to] improve their vocabulary and understanding of the English language because we’ve discovered that most of them do not do well because they do not understand the language.”
Further to that, as part of the organisation’s long-term goals, the school’s laboratory would receive a facelift to give youngsters a proper learning experience.
