MIDRAND – Operations commander, Captain Lionel Chetty has issued safety advice...

Operations commander of Midrand Police Station, Captain Lionel Chetty released a festive season message for all Midrand residents as well as safety tips to ensure a safe celebration season for everyone.

“When parking your vehicle to go shopping, make sure that your vehicle is properly locked and all your personal items are out of sight and when you return to your vehicle, scan the interior of your car to be sure no one is hiding inside,” said Chetty.

He warned that people should not leave their purse, wallet or cellphone in full view.

“Don’t resist if someone tries to take any of your belongings. Don’t chase someone who robs you, they may have a weapon, instead call 10111,” added Chetty.

While driving, motorists are encouraged to lock their vehicles and keep their windows closed as it limits the chances of someone grabbing something from the vehicle.

“Robbers expect people to have more money during the festive season and therefore people are urged to be extra careful and cautious of the people around them during an ATM withdrawal, and no one should allow a stranger to assist them.

“Midrand police together with Metro police, Midrand Community Policing Forum and security companies will increase their visibility during the festive season. There will be zero tolerance for drunk drivers, there will be increased stop-and-search operations looking for drugs and illegal firearms. The community is urged to avoid carrying large sums of money. We wish our community a safe festive season.”
