Residents catch rape suspect

MIDRAND – The victim's family had seen the suspect earlier offering to buy their seven-year-old child sweets.

 

Ivory Park police have arrested two men aged 20 and 26 following two rape incidents that took place in extensions 2 and 3 in Ivory Park, Midrand, on the weekend of 11 February.

Ivory Park police spokesperson Captain Bernard Matimulane said, “In the first incident, a 20-year-old suspect was caught, with the assistance of the community in Ext 2, after he allegedly raped a minor aged seven.”

Matimulane said the suspect, who is known to the family, had earlier taken the victim and another minor to shops nearby to buy them sweets. “The mother cried out for help and the community came out in numbers, and the suspect was arrested.”

The second rape suspect, a 26-year-old man, was arrested on for allegedly raping a woman in her 20s. Ivory Park police station commander Brigadier Mbongeni Ngcobo welcomed the arrests, saying they sent a clear message to other potential culprits.

“We appeal to residents to be careful, especially when walking at night,” said Ngcobo.
