Follow these tips when driving in bad weather
JOBURG - Heavy rains are expected in Johannesburg throughout the week which means motorist need to be on their toes all the time.
With heavy rain pouring down this week in Johannesburg, and the weather unlikely to change, motorists need to be extra cautious while driving.
During the wet weather, motorists are urged to keep safe by following these safety tips:
- Drive with your vehicle headlights on to make you more visible
- Slow down to a safe travelling speed as this will give you more time to react in an emergency situation
- Increase your following distance from other vehicles
- Be aware that loose gravel on the road may cause your vehicle to slide during braking
- Approach bridges and low-level crossings with caution
- Do not attempt to drive through flooded areas, even if the water looks shallow enough to drive through
- If your vehicle stalls, leave it immediately and seek higher ground
- When driving through large puddles and flooded roads, reduce your speed significantly to avoid vehicle floating
- Look out for flooding in dips on highway and bridges, especially low-lying bridges.
