Helping disadvantaged schools in Olievenhoutbosch

MIDRAND – Seshegong Secondary School and Bathabile Primary School received Mandela Day food parcels.

 

Vodacom, in partnership with numerous organisations, donated food parcels to two disadvantaged schools in Olievenhoutbosch on 24 July.

The food parcels were packed into buckets on 18 July as part of the Mandela Day initiative by Vodacom.

The two schools were identified by the Department of Basic Education to be one of the beneficiaries of the project aimed to fight hunger and eliminate poverty.

Pupils at Seshegong Secondary School welcomed the food buckets from Vodacom and lunch from Gift of the Givers.

Seshegong Secondary and Bathabile Primary schools received more than 2 000 food parcels combined.

Principal of Seshegong, Mmakgabo Nethonzhe said their youngsters perform really well. “In 2015, the school received a 98 per cent matric pass rate and received 90 per cent last year and we remain hopeful for 100 per cent pass this year,” said Nethonzhe.

Melanie Forbes, managing executive consumer business unit for Vodacom Gauteng region said, “We partnered with Gift of the Givers and Caring4Girls (Imbumba Foundation) who provided lunch to all pupils and sanitary pads to girls as part of honouring Madiba’s legacy.

“Vodacom packaged 50 000 buckets of food on 18 and 19 July and these buckets will be distributed to 60 schools around South Africa in accordance to their needs.”

Yase Godlo, Mandela Day manager for Nelson Mandela Foundation, said the foundation and Vodacom have partnered for five years and is focused on providing food for schools to allow education to flourish with all children well fed. The buckets comprised of jam, beans, stationary packages and soup among other things.

Seshegong Secondary School choir showed off their talent when Vodacom and numerous organisations visited the school.
