Three criminals arrested for robbery in Midrand

MIDRAND – Three criminals arrested for robbery after using Uber to attract unsuspecting victims.

Midrand police received a tip-off about a silver Toyota Etios which was being used to rob people on 4 August at about 10pm.

Mmakgomo Semono, the spokesperson for Midrand Police Station, said police were able to find the described vehicle with three men inside. Cellphones and an unknown amount of money were found inside the vehicle.

“Suspects would request an Uber vehicle only to rob the driver when it arrived,” said Semono. “The suspects were arrested and fortunately the victims were able to identify them as well as their stolen belongings.”

Police suspect these actions to be pure criminality and not related to the taxi-related disputes which flare up in the country from time to time.

The three suspects have been detained and charged with robbery and possession of suspected stolen property, however, further investigations are underway to determine whether or not it is the same group of people executing these types of crimes.

“We are pleased with the arrest and many more criminals are still going to be caught.”
