Man arrested for robbery in Ivory Park

MIDRAND – Community members work together to put robber behind bars.

 

Ivory Park police arrested a 32-year-old man on 28 August in connection with an alleged business robbery in Duduza whereby an unspecified amount of cash, airtime vouchers and cigarettes were stolen at gunpoint.

It is alleged that at about 10pm, two suspects entered the shop and one of the armed suspects instructed the two owners to lie down while he and his accomplice allegedly ransacked the place.

“One of the victims screamed which then resulted in residents coming out to assist. The two suspects panicked and fled the scene, with the community in hot pursuit,” said the spokesperson for Ivory Park Police Station, Captain Bernard Matimulane.

One of the suspects was caught by community members of which beat him up, however, his life was saved by the arrival of police.

The police recovered a firearm and three rounds of live ammunition on the scene.

The suspect is now under police guard in hospital and is facing a charge of business robbery and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Station commander, Brigadier David Ngcobo thanked the community for coming out in full force and for reclaiming their space from criminals. He, however, cautioned the community against taking the law into their own hands.

The police are still on the hunt for the other suspects who fled the scene.
