An attempted business robbery took place at Corporate Park South in Midrand on 22 February at about 7.20am whereby suspects came in under false pretences of being potential clients.
According to the complainant, Onias Ncube, the three men approached him as though they were interested in a purchase and furthermore asked to see the stock, which was beds.
“As soon as we got inside the warehouse, two of the men took out their firearms and as the company employees arrived, we were grouped and stripped of our cellphones and valuable belongings,” said Ncube.
The Midrand police spokesperson, Sergeant Matome Tlamela said according to the complainant, some of the staff members were allowed to continue working. The police believe this was a measure to create a normal working environment whereby arriving staff members and clients would not be able to notice anything suspicious from a distance.
“A staff member was able to send a message to the company’s Cape Town branch, alerting them to contact the police. We suspect that the staff member owned two cellphones and had only revealed one of her phones to the suspects.”
Tlamela said the incident was confirmed by the Johannesburg Flying Squad and Rapid Response who arrived at the scene. All three suspects were arrested and two firearms (a Glock 40 and 45 Acp Norinco) were confiscated.
“The vehicle which the suspects were using, had been hijacked in Germiston in January. The vehicle was seized and taken to Aeroton Viss, a police facility, whereby it will be assessed thoroughly.”
