Midrand police raided Riversand Primary Farm School as part of the current school searches programme taking place in Midrand.
Searching a primary school is not a common thing but for the safety of the pupils and a warning against bad behaviour the police saw it fitting to search some of the school’s classes.
Midrand police were joined on 16 March by various security companies, Metro Police, South African National Council on Alcoholism (Sanca) and national traffic police.

Riversand is a poor school with overcrowded classes which made it difficult to properly move around the class and search. The majority of the learners are from Diepsloot and other disadvantaged areas.
The school is struggling with a shortage of mobile classrooms, chairs and desks which makes it very difficult for children to get special treatment and for teachers to carry out their duties.
No illegal substances were found in the school but the police hope that this will serve as a warning because drug dealers tend to use children to get such substances in schools.
“The school searches are not a form of scaring children; they are being rolled out in various schools as a form of protecting our youth and especially the ones who are easily manipulated or used,” said Midrand police spokesperson, Sergeant Matome Tlamela.
