Midlands International School learners were given a glimpse into the world beyond the classroom on August 19, when the school hosted a career day.

Aimed at helping them make informed decisions about their future, the event brought together various institutions and professionals who engaged with learners about different career paths, study opportunities, entry requirements, and the skills needed to succeed in the workplace.

Among the institutions invited were VET, Alignment Exchange, Oakfield College, Rosebank College, and the International Hotel School, among others.

Learners from grades 8 to 11 had the opportunity to interact directly with representatives from the various institutions. Younger learners, from grades 4 to 7, were also included in the programme, with Counterpoint Risk demonstrating the work of its K9 unit.

Human Van Dyk, from Counterpoint Risk, said the demonstration was intended to give learners insight into how trained security dogs are used in the field to protect people and combat crime.

“We are here today to show the children what we do with K9s, K9 units, how they attack, how they are trained, and how they can operate out in the field to protect them and combat crime.”

He said exposing children to the work of K9 units could help them understand the role of security personnel and the training involved in protecting communities. He added that there were various career paths within the industry, including K9 operations, close protection, bodyguarding, and high-value protection.

For Grade 9 learner Tirelo Mokoraki, the career day offered an opportunity to explore careers and interact with professionals from different fields. “This career day was a very good experience. We got to learn different jobs, and we got to meet various people from different universities.

We got to meet entrepreneurs, IT managers, artists, veterinarians, and all sorts of people in jobs. It helps learners understand what they really want to do, and it gives them information on a broader scope to think about.

“Personally, I want to do IT. I’ve seen many universities, and I’ve heard of many throughout this career day. One thing I am really passionate about is technology, gaming, using laptops and computers, and really getting to use modern technology to help other people.”

Grade 11 learner Nonjabulo Khoza said the event also helped learners understand how rapidly the world of work and technology is changing.

“We learnt that artificial intelligence can be useful for educational purposes and in the workplace, and different universities came and showed us the application processes, what things that they offer, how we can apply, and other stuff.

“I think I do want to study psychology, maybe with Rosebank International, or I could go into hospitality management with International Hotel School.”

Teacher Candace Caroline Kelawan said: “Career day helps learners make informed decisions about their future by exposing them to different career paths, study options, and entry requirements.”
