Mihandzu is a youth-owned non-profit organisation set to improve the educational understanding and performance of learners from disadvantaged backgrounds of poverty, abuse and various social upheavals.
The organisation was founded by Khanya Memela who is currently the chairperson of Mihandzu which is based in the township of Ivory Park.
Mihandzu has focused on an improved educational understanding of mathematics and IT with the aim to improve the chances of learners passing matric, furthering their education and obtaining or creating sustainable employment.
Mihandzu currently operates on a weekly basis, every Saturday in Ivory Park at JB Matabane Secondary School.
“We cater for approximately 560 learners every Saturday with tutorials for Grade 8 learners and IT tutorials for Grade 10 learners,” said Memela.
“Our organisation, Mihandzu, started as a mathematics tutoring programme in 2015 in Ivory Park. The programme then expanded to a Grade 11 group at Umqhele Secondary School in 2016 and further reached JB Matabane Secondary School in 2017.

“To date, our operations at JB Matabane have seen a 9 per cent increase in the performance of mathematics from our Grade 8 group.”
The Mihandzu management team is made up of a dynamic group of young black professionals.
“Mihandzu’s operations are highly dependent on the efforts made by our energetic, youthful and committed volunteers.”
