Active Kids Day Nursery held its Human Rights Day march on 23 March from Vorna Valley to the Mall of Africa.
Manager of the nursery, Susan Mapfumo said the purpose of the march was to raise awareness in the community about human rights in South Africa. She said it was also about people and their rights to education and freedom. “When children have knowledge of their rights, it is a huge investment in their own individual futures and the future of the nation in general.”
The children danced and received attention from the motorists and passersby. “We received a lot of attention from the community, with motorists even stopping to find out what it was all about”.
Mapfumo said the children spent the entire month of March learning about their rights and why the day was celebrated. “Our children had fun bringing this awareness through our dance group called The Drummies, who performed even in the roads which grabbed the attention of everyone who was busy doing their own errands.”
The principal of Active Kids Day Nursery, Tasha Naidoo, said she was excited about the march and the enthusiasm showed by children during the day. “We had experienced a horrible wet weather in the morning but through the children and parents’ sacrifice, they managed to march and the weather cleared in our favour. Our active kids were the heroes of the day as they were very excited and holding each other’s hands when they got tired just to encourage each other to keep going.”
Naidoo further thanked ward councillor Annette Deppe and the Metro police for their assistance. She also thanked the management of Mall of Africa for hosting them.
