Officer leaves service with a victory

MIDRAND – The two men were given life sentences for murder.

Rabie Ridge Warrant Officer Cedric Mphahlele recently went on early retirement with a sweet victory of a hefty sentencing of two suspects in a murder case he was working on.

The two men were given life sentences for murder and more years for other crimes by the Johannesburg High Court on 14 March. Michael Khumalo (35) and Bongane Ngwenya were both given a life sentence each for the murder of Sydney Monareng and Mhlanguleni Xaba.

According to the police, Monareng was selling cigarettes in Kanana when two men confronted him and shot him in the head leading to his instant death. His friend Xaba who was with him at the time was also shot and was rushed to Esangweni Clinic where he was certified dead on arrival.

The suspects were also sentenced to eight years imprisonment for possession of unlicensed firearms and four years in prison for illegal possession of live ammunition.

Rabie Ridge Police Station Commander, Colonel Johana Ngoma congratulated Mphahlele for the conviction as one of his many successes in his years of service.

“He has done a very good job on the case and has also increased the community’s confidence in the police. This will contribute in the fight against crime in the area,” she said.
