Police are warning pedestrians to be vigilant when walking along Vodacom Boulevard in Midrand following a number of mugging incidents reported over the past few weeks.
The spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station Sergeant Matome Tlamela said the street had been identified as a crime hotspot.
She added that one of the incidents reported had taken place at about 6.10pm on 8 May. A person was robbed along the street while carrying a laptop bag over his shoulder.
“He was confronted by three males who came up behind him,” she said.
“One of the men, who was armed with a knife, pushed the man to the ground. While still lying on the ground, another suspect pointed a firearm at him and demanded his wallet.”
The man was robbed of his wallet, cards, car keys for an Audi and a laptop.
“I would like to warn the public to be cautious in this area where muggings have commonly taken place in the early morning and around rush hour time with people using the Gautrain bus. We, as the police, will be doing more regular patrols of the area to increase police visibility. The suspects involved in this particular incident are still at large.”
