Ivory Park Police Station has raised concern over the escalating number of Uber and Taxify drivers being robbed in the Ivory Park and Ebony Park areas.
According to the Ivory Park police, three cases of drivers being robbed have been reported recently. “In all of the three cases, the modus operandi of the robbers was the same,” said the spokesperson for the station, Captain Bernard Matimulane.
“A cab is called via the app by two or three suspects who claim to be too drunk to drive,” Matimulane added that the perpetrators provided a random destination to the driver.
“Before long, a gun is pointed at the driver, he is tied up, kidnapped and robbed of his belongings while the suspects search for a tracking device.”
Police are investigating the cases and following possible leads. The station’s acting station commander Colonel Baba Mpotoane called on anyone with information related to the robberies to contact the police.
“Cab hailing service provides a safe form of transport for people, especially at night,” he said.
“We should not let a few criminals spoil this good service. It is on that basis that we appeal for information to ensure that these robbers are brought to book before causing further damage.”
