Midrand has been having a water challenge for weeks but the latest affected area is Vorna Valley, which was without water for most of the day on 26 June due to Joburg Water repair work.
Joburg Water‘s communications manager Isaac Dhludhlu released a press statement on 26 June stating, “Midrand residents are informed to take note that we have a major outage that is affecting Vorna Valley, Halfway Gardens and some few arrears due to a water pipe that has burst in the wetland in Le Roux [Avenue].”
Dhludhlu furthermore stated, “The JW team working on-site has tried to drill through the old line to insert a new pipe but have unfortunately not been successful. There was another intervention that was attempted which required to drilling through the wetland next to the old pipe but the team cannot get the drill through due to large rocks on site.
“Water will be off in the affected area for at least another 18 hours, but we estimate that we should have completed repairs late this afternoon.”
Ward 132 councillor, Annette Deppe, reiterated Dhludhlu’s words when she said Joburg Water had completed its work at midnight yesterday.
“But unfortunately problems with one of the connections were picked up and therefore Johannesburg Water has to return to the site and has been working there since 9am,” said Deppe.
Deppe said due to the ongoing pipe works, some of the areas in Midrand are without water and as a result, a water tanker was delivered at the Waterfall Business Park in morning.
Deppe went on the explain that the City of Johannesburg has a R170-billion infrastructure backlog and the new developments are also adding onto the already overloaded infrastructure systems in Midrand.
“All we are doing at the moment as the city is patching where the bursts occur.”
“We have two water towers approved that will be built in the 2018/19 budget in Midrand,” concluded Deppe.
Joburg Water has apologised for any inconvenience caused by the water cuts.
More updates will be announced as soon as there are changes.
