Separation@Source programme reaches Midrand

MIDRAND – Pikitup, together with Phambili Services, will be rolling out the Separation@Source programme.

Recycling across Johannesburg is compulsory for all residents as of 1 July and the City of Johannesburg and Pikitup have teamed up with Phambili Services to roll out the Separation@Source programme in the Midrand Region.

“Phambili Services (Pty) Ltd is a leading waste management company established in 1996 in recognition of the growing need for sustainable integrated waste management solutions in the waste management sector in South Africa.

“In partnership with Pikitup since October 2017 Phambili Services commenced the rollout of the Separation@Source programme in the Midrand area,” said Marushka Charnley from Phambili Services.

“Diverting waste away from landfill sites has been the key objective of Pikitup and the City Of Joburg and has been made simple through the Separation@Source programme. Through the programme, residents are encouraged to recycle waste generated from their houses and the service is free of charge,” said Charnley.

Each household is given a blue plastic bag which must be used for the placement of all dry recyclable materials on a weekly basis. Residents will use their black wheelie bins to dispose of non-recyclable waste and organic materials.

Each area has a designated collection day when Phambili will collect on a weekly basis.

Recyclable materials, which will go into the blue recycling bags, include; all paper, cardboard, cans, plastic, glass containers and jars from each household.

“Residents will then need to place their recyclables outside their residences on the corresponding collection day for their respective areas where Phambili Services will collect once a week and sort the recyclables at our sorting facility in Clayville. The recycling bags will be replaced, ready for the next week of recycling,” added Charnley.

This project has been growing in strides since implementation in multiple households across Midrand (Poplar Academy, Curro Riverside, The Turkish School) as well as other schools in the area.

“Since the project rollout in October 2017 over 181 000 tons of recyclables have been successfully diverted from landfill sites after the first seven months of operation.”

Recyclables are baled together using a baler and taken to various recycling plants.
Recycling bags are collected from residents as well as within complexes and estates.
