N1 northbound lane closure in Midrand to impact traffic for three months
Sanral has announced long-term lane diversions on the N1 northbound in Midrand to allow for the construction of the new K60 Bridge.
Motorists travelling on the N1 northbound through Midrand face three months of traffic diversions to allow for the construction of the new K60 Bridge.
The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) announced that the temporary traffic measures on the N1-20 northbound will run from August 14 to November 13, covering the stretch from km 50.4N to km 52.4N.

The roadworks are required to facilitate the construction of the K60 Bridge over the N1-20 freeway, a project managed by the Gauteng department of roads and transport. The department confirmed that work on the K60 Road in Midrand is already underway.
The project aims to improve traffic flow, enhance road safety, and strengthen connectivity for communities and businesses across the province.
A 200m transition area will divert traffic safely from the normal lane configuration into the temporary accommodation. A 100m buffer zone will be maintained between live traffic and the work area to provide a safety separation for both road users and construction personnel.
A 100m work zone will accommodate the construction activities. Traffic will be diverted through the temporary lane configuration while construction is undertaken within this protected area.

A 200m transition area will be provided beyond the work zone to safely guide traffic back into the normal lane configuration.
Sanral Gauteng provincial head Progress Hlahla advised road users to plan their trips accordingly during the temporary lane diversion.
“Adhere to the traffic accommodation signage and the flag persons’ advanced warnings,” he said. “It is not only for your own safety, but also that of the construction personnel on site.”
Sanral apologised for any inconvenience caused and said it remains committed to improving the safety and quality of national roads.
