A Kaalfontein man who was arrested for killing his girlfriend was sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court.
Xolani Prince Mdaka (23), of Kaalfontein, was recently sentenced for fatally stabbing his girlfriend Moipone Mokgalabone (21) at his home last year. Mokgalabone was stabbed multiple times by Mdaka after he accused her of cheating.
Station commander for the Ivory Park Police Station, Brigadier David Ngcobo has expressed satisfaction over the 15-year effective jail sentence. He said immediately after Detective Constable Eddie Lebopo was handed the docket for further investigation, he followed all the leads meticulously and identified the key witnesses, which are the efforts that led to the conviction of the suspect.
“Domestic violence in Ivory Park is rife. We believe that this conviction and lengthy sentence will serve as a warning to anyone prone to committing spousal abuse that the law is bound to catch up with them,” said Ngcobo.
Ngcobo commended Lebopo’s tireless efforts. “I appreciate his efforts and most importantly, the witnesses who made statements and testified when needed. Lest we forget, some cases are lost due to the reluctance of witnesses to a crime to come forward,” he said.
Ngcobo further appealed to those in abusive relationships to speak out and seek the necessary assistance before it’s too late. “Before domestic violence can end up as something worse than murder, chances are the signs would have been there. These signs include, but not limited to, jealousy, stalking, going through phones and excessive control to verbal threats.”
