Midrand sector managers together with the police arrested two boys on 19 July for an armed robbery, who are alleged to have terrorised people in Sector 5 for weeks.
A man was walking towards an open veld in Vorna Valley near Le Roux Road where two boys pretended to be walking past before they stopped next to the man and pulled out a gun demanding he hand over his cellphone and wallet.
Midrand police spokesperson, Sergeant Matome Tlamela said, “Out of fear, the victim surrendered his belongings to the suspects who immediately ran away after they got hold of the cellphone and wallet.
“The victim reported the case to the police on the very same day, and was driven back to the scene of the crime by the police but before they reached the scene the victim was able to recognise the two suspects. Police gave chase and were able to arrest the first suspect while the second persisted in running away but was eventually caught,” said Tlamela.
The police confiscated what looked like a firearm from the suspects, which was supposedly used in the robbery, only to realise that it was a toy gun.
Tlamela added that the police then accompanied the suspects to where they stay in Ivory Park and raided their home, which resulted in multiple cellphones being found and confiscated because it was suspected that these were previously stolen cellphones.
The police are urging all people to come to the Midrand Police Station to collect their belongings if they have previously been victims of a crime where their cellphone was stolen.
“Please, can members of the community bring with them something that will prove that it’s their cellphone or have information that can assist.”
